Commented on NPOESS in Space (Finally)
"NPOESS" - great, really catchy name NASA. They should've had another one of those contests where they get a 9-year old girl to name it. I'm sure she could've come up with something more interesting.... -
Commented on NASA IG Sends Cops in Flack Vests After 74 Year Old, 4'11" Grandmother
So it's OK to sell stolen property as long as there's a market value? Editor's note: There is no evidence - anywhere - that this is "stolen property". If you have found evidence that it was stolen then show us... -
Commented on Dayton Uses New White House Online Petition Process To Get A Shuttle
Rotation - not going to happen. The sheer cost of such a thing would put it out of reach of all the museums/locations you'd like to see it in!... -
Commented on Dayton Uses New White House Online Petition Process To Get A Shuttle
Well we all know what role the military had in shaping the shuttle design (not all of it for good), and its DOD missions, but it was primarily a civilian spacecraft. If not NYC - Enterprise should go to Houston,... -
Commented on NASA Studies Show Cheaper Alternatives to SLS
"The pork barrel spending of congress is destroying this country." No. No its not. Pork barrel spending can be bad but amounts only to about $16.5 billion/year - that's 0.5% of the fed budget. True we'd be better off if... -
Commented on Let's Fund "The Astronaut's Secret"
@Steve - is is a double standard or is it an increased medical technology & understanding? If Deke were an astronaut today would he be disqualified from flight?... -
Commented on Let's Fund "The Astronaut's Secret"
@energik - "very rare" is subjective - virtually all commemorative coins are labeled "rare" or "limited". Its more marketing than reality. Note the back of the coin says "contains metal flown on the historic space shuttle mission" which is completely... -
Commented on UARS Update: NASA Still Doesn't Know Where it Landed
And yet Alan Dyer and a group of experienced amateur astronomers in Calgary saw nothing even though they were right on the track.... -
Commented on SLS, Saturn V, And Ares V Color Schemes (Update)
"It's not the colours themselves, it's the dishonesty from Public Affairs. If PAO wanted to invoke Saturn V, then just tell us that." I didn't realize that every animation produced by PAO had to come with disclosure statements!! I stand... -
Commented on SLS, Saturn V, And Ares V Color Schemes (Update)
Are you frakking kidding me? Do you guys really have nothing better to do but b*tch about paint colors??!... -
Commented on Does SMD Have a Bias Against Venus?
"Could there be a massive conspiracy amongst climate scientists who prevent Venusian missions from getting off the ground?" That's pretty damn funny - you are saying that Congress and NASA are afraid of climate scientists and are being strong armed... -
Commented on Why Can't Everyone Get A Chance To Name Things on Mars?
I gather that these names are used internally by the people guiding the rover. By the time a name got picked, the name would not really have much use.... -
Commented on NASA OIG Critical Of Paying For Employee Education
I dunno I don't see anything really inappropriate at all in this...except perhaps there needs to be a rule that if NASA pays for education, there should be a promise of "X" years of service. (ie similar to Army ROTC:... -
Commented on Today's Tabloid News: Royal Party Boy Wants to Be a NASA Astronaut
I say Bully for him! We'd be happy to have 'em. (Lor' luv a duck! Once around da planet! Know what I mean?)... -
Commented on Boeing Announces Commercial Crew Rocket Selection
Forgive the ignorance, but what's the difference between the Boeing CST-100 and Lockheed's MPCV?... -
Commented on What Name Would You Pick for Pluto's Newly-Discovered Moon?
I am rooting for "Xiphion" - neamed for a wreath of flowers Pluto wore. Though "Thanatos" is pretty good too (Greek personification of Death). Re: IAU - the IAU is not "self-appointed". Who gave them the right to name objects?... -
Commented on Being Clear As To Who Actually Cancelled The Shuttle
I don't think you have any idea what you're talking about....even if Obama had a full-fledged plan from the moment he set foot in the White House, there still would've been a large multi-year gap. Moreover the X-37 is too... -
Commented on NASA is Sitting on Dawn Images Again (Update)
Well see now - there is the image from July 16 - you guys are so impatient!... -
Commented on NASA is Sitting on Dawn Images Again (Update)
Sheesh...it has already been mentioned that Dawn can't take pictures while it is thrusting. And right now its is thrusting - I assume they are adjusting the spacecraft into a prelim orbit which IIRC won't be until early August (mission... -
Commented on Ed Weiler Thinks Obama's JWST Budget = "Road to Nowhere"
> Congress isn’t trying to kill science. They’re trying to teach a lesson. We that's pretty funny...as if Congress really even knew what that was.... -

Commented on Houston You Have a Cheese Problem
How dare you people malign our God-given, American made Cheese-like processed dairy pseudo products! The Cheese (sic) Council will hear of this - mark my worded THE CHEESE COUNCIL WILL HEAR OF THIS!! ;-)... -
Commented on Houston You Have a Cheese Problem
Why Brie? Because you can't spread American cheese.... -
Commented on Vesta Images and Movie Finally Released
Eh - I wouldn't call these "pretty pictures". Interesting yes, but the probe is still too far away for the high resolution stuff.... -
Commented on Paolo's Space Pix Found!
"Isn't there some way there could make a free flyer camera for the last Shuttle flight, and take all kinds? How hard could this be?" Are you buying?... -
Commented on Why is JPL Sitting on Dawn Images? (Update: Still Waiting)
@Tod - oops! My bad, you're right Vesta is about 4 arc minutes. Still that's too darned small for front page news or APOD!... -
Commented on Why is JPL Sitting on Dawn Images? (Update: Still Waiting)
I checked and currently Vesta is only 1 arc minute in diameter as viewed from Dawn. So no you're really not going to see this thing get much bigger until say late July. You're right it will be exciting but... -
Commented on Why is JPL Sitting on Dawn Images? (Update: Still Waiting)
That was my point yesterday Geoffrey. I think they haven't been released simply because all they would show is a white dot similar to the one they've already released.... -
Commented on So ... Where Are those Cool Soyuz Fly Around Pix? (Update)
Still it is kind of annoying...you'd think the Rooskies would know about that thing - what's it called the Intertube? Really how hard is it to pull the cards and load 'em up on Youtube? Re: Dawn - I suspect... -
Commented on "Challenger Changed My Life" Program
You misunderstand the function and value of "informal" education. There's no way a student can walk into a Challenger Center, science center/museum or planetarium and walk out a couple hours later with a full-fledged science education. They certainly do learn...
