The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), the nonprofit organization promoting and managing research on board the International Space Station (ISS) U.S. National Laboratory, today announced it will provide up to $100,000 in grant funding for qualified research projects as part of its partnership with the "MassChallenge Startup Accelerator."

CASIS Is Still Having Problems

In hearings before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation yesterday, Interim Executive Director Jim Royson of the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) stated that CASIS was following the reference model that had been established for NASA (by ProOrbis) for the operation of the entity (NPO) operating the U.S. National Laboratory on the International Space Station that CASIS was awarded a contract to run:

The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), the nonprofit organization promoting and managing research on board the International Space Station (ISS) U.S. National Laboratory, announced today a solicitation for proposals in relation to advancing protein crystallization using microgravity.

An announcement this week whereby Teledyne Technologies will be using the International Space Station (ISS) for Earth observation points out a persistent problem with regard to the use of the ISS: who is actually in charge of how Americans are going to use it?

NASA is giving CASIS (The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space) $15 million a year and the keys to a large portion of a $100 billion International Space Station - one funded by taxpayers.

The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), the non-profit organization managing the International Space Station U.S. National Laboratory, today announced a deal with NanoRacks, LLC, to reserve space on the first commercial platform available for researchers outside the ISS in the extreme environments of space. In June, CASIS will issue a formal solicitation to the research community and private enterprise for their proposals to use this one-of-a-kind platform for anything from earth observation to materials, and biological sciences.

Increased scrutiny has been focused on The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), the non-profit organization chosen by NASA to manage its research assets aboard the International Space Station. A Congressional mandate directed NASA to create the ISS National Laboratory and seek an outside entity to manage the use of that resource for science, technology, and commercial research.
